Very Firm Mattresses
An extra firm mattress provides the highest level of support available, with minimal sinkage and a surface that keeps your spine in a neutral position throughout the night. Great for back and stomach sleepers, heavier individuals, or anyone with a back condition. Our range of extra firm mattresses starts from £199 and comes in pocket spring, memory foam, orthopaedic and hybrid options in every UK size from single to super king.

What are the benefits of an extra firm mattress?
75% of UK bad sleepers are woken by pain or discomfort. For those who need the highest level of support, an extra firm mattress addresses this in several specific ways.
- Spinal alignment: an extra firm surface provides the most support for your spine, keeping it in a neutral position and helping to alleviate back pain. This is particularly beneficial for back and stomach sleepers, as a softer surface allows the lower back or stomach to sink, causing the spine to curve.
- Reduced pressure points: the consistent, even surface of an extra firm mattress distributes your weight across the full surface rather than allowing it to concentrate at the hips and shoulders.
- Minimal motion transfer: the denser construction of an extra firm mattress means less movement is felt across the surface when a partner moves, a meaningful benefit for shared beds where one person is heavier or more mobile in the night.
- Durability: extra firm mattresses hold their structure for longer than softer options, as the firmer core compresses less over time. A well-maintained very firm mattress should last 8–10 years before it begins to lose its support.
What is the difference between a firm and an extra firm mattress?
A firm mattress provides strong support with a noticeably solid feel. It resists compression more than a medium or softer feel and suits most back and stomach sleepers. An extra firm mattress goes a step further; it is the sturdiest option available, with the least surface give of any comfort grade. The practical difference is that on a firm mattress, most sleepers will feel slight surface contouring. On an extra firm mattress, there is very little surface give, your body rests on rather than into the mattress.

Who is an extra firm mattress best for?
An extra firm mattress is best for:
- Back and stomach sleepers: the extra firm surface provides adequate support for your lower back and keeps the spine in the correct position while preventing the body from sinking. Unlike side sleepers, back and stomach sleepers do not need the mattress to cushion the shoulder and hip, so the lack of give is an advantage.
- Heavier sleeers: if you weigh 16 stone (100kg) or more, a standard mattress may compress enough that you lose the support benefit. An extra firm mattress maintains its structure under greater body weight, which is why it is the preferred choice for heavier individuals.
- Sleepers with orthopaedic needs: if you have a specific back condition, such as a herniated disc or scoliosis, or have been advised by a medical professional to sleep on a firm surface, a very firm mattress is a great starting point.
Extra firm mattresses aren’t recommended for side sleepers, who typically need more cushioning around the shoulders and hips, or for lighter sleepers (under 10 stone), who may also find these too hard. For help, we offer a wide range of mattresses for your sleeping position as well.
What extra firm mattress fillings can I choose from?
There are various types of extra-firm mattresses to choose from, all of which offer their own benefits.
- Pocket spring extra firm mattresses: these very firm mattresses are made of individual coils, which provide excellent support and reduce motion transfer.
- Traditional spring extra firm mattresses: known for their affordability, these offer firm support and great durability.
- Memory foam extra firm mattresses: moulding to your body, they provide comfortable pressure relief while maintaining a firmer feel.
- Hybrid extra firm mattresses: these very firm mattresses combine springs and foam to offer the best of both comfort and support.
- Natural extra firm mattresses: including wool, cotton and latex, these offer breathable, eco-friendly and anti-allergy support.
- Gel extra firm mattresses: offer a cooling effect, making them ideal for those who get hot at night.
- Orthopaedic mattresses: many of our extra-firm mattresses also feature an orthopaedic construction and are particularly suited to sleepers with back conditions or those who have been advised to sleep on a hard surface.

Is an extra firm mattress good for you?
Yes, for the right sleeper. An extra firm mattress is good for you if you need the highest level of spinal support and you tend to sleep on your back or stomach or are a heavier individual.
However, extra firm is not universally better than softer alternatives. To check if it’s good for you: if you currently sleep on a firm mattress and wake without aches, your firmness is likely right. If you wake up with lower back pain, an extra-firm option may be the step up you need.
How firm is too firm for a mattress?
If you are waking up with new aches, particularly in the shoulders, hips or lower back, your mattress may be too firm. A mattress that is too hard creates pressure points at bony areas of the body because there is not enough give for these areas to sink slightly into the surface.
Other signs your mattress may be too firm include feeling like you are lying on rather than sleeping in the mattress, noticing pins and needles or numbness in your limbs during the night, or sleeping better when you stay somewhere with a softer mattress.
New extra firm mattresses can also take 4–6 weeks to break in, so give it time to adapt to your body weight before drawing conclusions. During this period, a mattress topper can temporarily soften the feel without replacing the underlying support. If, after the break-in period, an extra-firm mattress is still causing discomfort, use our 100-Night Comfort Guarantee to exchange it for a softer option.
